Fishing on the Navajo Reservation

Fishing on the Navajo Reservation is open to the general public, but a special tribal permit is required. You don't need an Arizona State Fishing license.

You can get the tribal fishing permit one of two ways. You can download the application, fill it out and mail it to the address below ... or you could purchase it directly at one of the authorized vendors on the Navajo Reservation.

If you choose to download the application and fill it out, be sure to write "For Fishing" on it - since the same application is used for both hunting and fishing.

Also be sure to allow a week or two for mail delivery and processing. The office does not accept applications by email or fax. Once your application has been received, it will be processed and the tribal fishing permit will be mailed back to you.

You can also take your completed application to the office in person if you happen to be in the area. And of course, as already mentioned, you could also buy a tribal fishing permit from authorized vendors on the Reservation.

Fishing Fees

Tribal Fishing Permit fees are listed below:

  • $22.50 for tribal members (good for whole season)
  • $40 for non-tribal members (good for whole season)
  • $8.75 for one day fishing permit (tribal members)
  • $15 for one day fishing permit (non-tribal members)
  • $18.75 for a 3-day fishing permit (tribal members)
  • $25 for 3-day fishing permit (non-tribal members)

Fees are subject to change. For more information (or to check fees), contact the office below or click here to check tribal permit fees online. This the same address to send fishing applications too.

Like all Arizona fishing areas, the Navajo Nation has their own set up Fishing Regulations. Be sure to print the page and take it with you if you plan to fish on Navajo land!

You can also download a map and list of lakes where you can fish on the Navajo Reservation.

Then Navajo Nation does have a fish hatchery (located in Toadlena, New Mexico). This hatchery was built in order to supply rainbow trout to the Navajo lakes.

If you're interested, you can even check the stocking report to see when the lakes were stocked last. The Navajo Nation Fish & Wildlife Department does stock rainbow trout, bluegill, and catfish in many of the lakes.

This stocking report also gives some information about current fishing conditions, so it's worth a look.
